本書は、言語評価について知見を得たいと望む一般的な読者（院生や研究者を目指すものを含む）を主な対象として書かれている。言語評価は応用言語学の中でも専門性の高い分野と見なされがちだが、実際には教師、学校管理者、保護者、企業の研修担当者など、言語能力を評価する立場にある幅広い人々に深く関わっている。多くの教育現場では、正式な訓練を受けていないにもかかわらず、教師がテストを作成したり学習者の成績を解釈したりする必要があるという現状がある。そこで本書は、言語評価の概念を誰にでも理解できるように、分かりやすく、実践的かつ親しみやすい形で紹介することを目指している。本書では、著者の博士課程での研究と、JSPS科研費によって支援された3つの主要な研究プロジェクトを総合的に取り上げている。これらの研究はすべてアイトラッキング技術を用いており、複数のテキストや視覚情報を統合して処理するタスクにおいて、学習者がどのように情報を理解し、どこに注意を向け、どのように問題解決を行うのかを探究したものである。アイトラッキングによって、学習者の視線行動や認知プロセスの特徴がどのように明らかになるのかが示されている。

著者のプロフィール

Mikako Nishikawa is an Associate Professor in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nagasaki University, Japan. She completed her PhD in Applied Linguistics at the University of Bristol under the supervision of Professor Guoxing Yu. Her thesis employed eye-tracking techniques to study subjects’ performance on writing tasks that required integration of multiple source texts and graphs. She won multiple awards, including the British Council Assessment Research Awards (2015), Text Inspector, LTF Oxford Poster Prize (Language Testing Forum) (2015), The International Research Foundation for English Language (TIRF) Doctoral Dissertation Award (2016), Excellent Presentation as a Young Scholar Award, The Japan Association of College English Teachers (JACET) (2018), and the Best Teachers Award, Kobe University (2018, 2019). She continues to pursue research using eye-tracking methods in the field of language assessment in the L2 domain.

著者は現在、長崎大学多文化社会学部の准教授である。ブリストル大学にてYu教授の指導のもと、応用言語学の博士号を取得した。博士論文ではアイトラッキング技術を用い、統合型・英語ライティング問題（図表と新聞記事などを要約するタイプ）における学習者の傾向を分析した。これまでに、British Council Assessment Research Awards（2015）、LTF Oxford Poster Prize（2015）、 The International Research Foundation for English Language（TIRF）博士論文賞（2016）、日本大学英語教育学会（JACET）若手研究者優秀発表賞（2018）、神戸大学Best Teachers Award（2018・2019）など数多くの賞を受賞している。現在も、第二言語領域の言語評価においてアイトラッキング手法を活用した研究を継続している。
