This book is an attempt to bring to you some of the important theoretical concepts and aspects of Japanese culture and education in terms of their idiosyncratic features, pluses and minuses.
My close involvement with cultural studies began in the fortunate context of being in charge of interpreting and translation courses in Japanese universities, featuring Japanese culture and education.
The focus of the research in Chapter I was on the clarification of the significance of communication-oriented English instruction and on the attempt to introduce the study of Japanese culture into ESL teaching in higher institutions in Japan.
Chapter II and III deal with how Japanese education, which has recently been arousing controversy among educators both inside and outside Japan as to virtues and vices, can be objectively evaluated from an international perspective including its pluses and minuses.
In Chapter IV we discussed how some of the non-verbal forms of communication which some linguists opine as idiosyncratic patterns of Japanese way of communication have been forged through the implicit or explicit interaction with the ramifications of a combination of cultural and environmental processes that the Japanese as a nation have gone through over an extended period of time.
In Chapter V we analyzed the keynotes shared by many of today's conventionally accepted nihonjinron or analytical theories on Japanese national identity and Japanese culture, and presented questions and counter-evidence vis-a-vis these representative theories, in order to make a more in-depth study of a specific, typically Japanese motive.
This analysis is followed by the investigation in Chapter VI where we focus on "Japanism" as a worldview, originally being of religious character, which conditions the pattern of Japanese culture.

著者のプロフィール

Kiyotaka Doi, a graduate of Kwansei Gakuin University and of Pacific Lutheran University, earned his M.A. at both of these universities, is professor of interpreting and translation at University of Hyogo.
He is the author of A Guide to English Expressions on American Life, coauthor of Toward a Good Knowledge and Better Understanding of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam in English, and editor of several other volumes on American culture and Japanese culture.
